A Quick Food & Drink Tour of Los Angeles: Hollywood / Los Feliz Edition
Having lived in Los Angeles just one month shy of 6 years, I like to consider myself a pretty legit tour guide. It's a rarity that I have visitors but when I do, I like to show them as much as I can in a short amount of time. Also, I generally assume everyone is as poor as I am so I try to be budget friendly.
This week, I have the pleasure of hosting Brittany, one of my nearest and dearest from NC. After driving her around my neighborhood (Los Feliz), showing her the lay of the land, we stopped in to one of my favorite places - Alcove / Big Bar.
Alcove is perfect because they have everything. Not only is it a cafe / bakery but has a full service bar attached, I have been here for business meetings as well as grabbing a drink with my friends after I left the gym. It's got a perfect cozy garden feel that I absolutely love. Their specialty cocktails change daily so I put all my trust in them and automatically order it every time. Never have I had one of their cocktails that I didn't like. (Not pictured: the happy hour Carnitas Sliders that I inhaled in 2 seconds. )
Obviously after drinks I had to take Brit over to Salt & Straw in Larchmont. Yes we absolutely tried all of the specialty flavors. Yes we tried the turkey flavor (and it wasn't that bad!) I grabbed the split single scoop of Goat Cheese & Pumpkin Pie + Sweet Potato with Maple Pecans. A++ Highly recommend!
I couldn't let Brit leave LA without trying California Donuts. Open 24 hours a day, California Donuts (the 3rd St location in K-Town specifically) is a GO TO for specialty donuts for Angelenos. They have so many wacky donut combinations and they all taste like Jesus sent them down himself. Ever seen an Instagram famous fashion blogger post a photo of an amazing looking donut with cereal on top? They likely got them at California Donuts. I have visited a few other locations but none are as good as the shop on 3rd. If you are planning on stopping in on a weekend, make sure to go early as a line forms pretty quickly.
A few (literally just a few - I could suggest thousands) other places I love to suggest to visitors are:
- Tiki Ti - Who doesn't love a dive Tiki bar?
- Good Times At Davey Wayne's - a bar that looks like you stepped onto the set of That 70's Show
- Stout - Amazing burgers and beers
- The Waffle - Pretty self explanatory.
- The Griddle - Insane pancakes. Get there early
- Velvet Margarita - They have massive margaritas in pineapples
- Bossa Nova - great Brazilian food
- Malo - elevated Mexican street food (and a great happy hour)
- LittleFork - they have a bourbon bloody mary as well as poutine
