Love Incorporated: The Business of Doing What You Love
Jennifer Noel Taylor, author of Love Incorporated, graduated from Cal Poly with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science and a Minor in Philosophy. After graduation, she started her first job as a Software Engineer at a big company in San Diego. Like so many people, she felt incredibly trapped and depressed at a job that paid the bills but didn’t speak to her passion in life. She constantly suffered from “a case of the Mondays,” this weighty sense of foreboding at the beginning of each work week. Jennifer then decided to pursue her true passion at night: massage school! She studied massage at the International Professional School of Bodywork, Esalen Institute in Big Sur, and the Maui Academy of Healing Arts.
While working on patients, she started to feel the “energy fields” emanating from them. She became fascinated by energy healing and studied various energy healing modalities including Reiki. She met Richard Gordon, the founder of Quantum-Touch, at his lecture on Maui and fell in love with the vision and received a very clear message from the Universe that Quantum-Touch was her true calling. Shortly after she met Richard, she quit her job and took a leap of faith, finally following her heart. She later took over as CEO of Quantum-Touch in June 2002. "When you are following your Heart, doors will open almost magically."
I had the pleasure of being sent an early copy of Love Incorporated (out Feb 14th) and loved it. Jennifer focuses on Four Key Insights that make up this book. These insights are a guide to creating a business (and life) doing what you love. Jennifer stresses that you don’t need to sacrifice your passion, spirit or integrity to have an abundant business.
After reading Love Incorporated, I asked Jennifer a few questions.
- Having made so many big leaps in your life, in your opinion, what are two key signs that will tell someone they are not on the right path they should be on?
I feel the biggest sign that tells someone they are not on the right path is a feeling of depression. So many people are on antidepressants these days and I feel that antidepressants DO NOT actually get to the root of the issue! I feel depression is caused by a lack of connection to the Divine, God, your Authentic Self and your true calling.
Another HUGE sign is a feeling that you're ignoring a dream or you have certain longings from the Heart that keep whispering to you. Everyone has a dream that both compels them and scares them at the same time. Oftentimes as kids, we were connected to our dreams. But later on in life, people can lose that connection and the wonder they had as a child. If you have a dream that continues to haunt you, I believe this is actually Spirit guiding you to your true calling.
- Many people can't just up and leave their life/career at the drop of a hat if they feel like they aren't in the right place. What is one simple thing that they should be doing in the mean time while they try to start setting the wheels in motion?
Yes, just quitting your job may not be the most responsible solution! I feel that Spirit (or God) will guide you step by step without placing you in financial jeopardy. So for example, you may feel guided to take a baby step in the direction of your dream after work or on weekends.
In my case, I had a full time job and then after work, I went to massage school. I started working on people through massage school and discovered that my true calling was energy medicine. As I describe in my book I did end up quitting my job eventually. But when I quit, my next path was clearly lined up for me. Although there were challenges, at no time did I feel I was placing myself in financial ruin!
It may be scary and there may be some leaps of faith involved. When you follow your Guidance, you will feel compelled to quit when it's time. Everyone's journey is unique but I do feel you will receive step by step Guidance when you set the intent to follow your Heart.
-Easy, generic question but I always love to know: Why did you decide to write a book?
It may sound crazy but the book asked me to write it :-) I decided to plant a huge garden last year, so I was spending hours out in my garden. One day, Spirit gave me a download of everything in my book. I felt so much joy around this idea and I just started writing. It was so much fun for me. I believe that spending so much time in nature, really helped me hear my Guidance and then the book just came through!
-Did you have a specific playlist you listened to while writing?
I actually write better without music but I would always consciously work at raising my joy level before writing so I could open my heart and write from the heart. So before I started writing, I would watch inspirational movies or shows.
For example, I watched Bat Kid Begins - the Make a Wish story about the boy who wanted to be Bat Kid for a day - and this wish inspired 1000's of people! I also watched episodes of Ellen where she pays it forward and surprises people who are doing good things in the world. Watching these types of video would really give me joy, open my heart, and put me in a space to write.
-What's one unique thing that people don't know about you?
I actually performed flying trapeze in a circus show! I love the circus and have a background in gymnastics. A few years ago, I learned the flying trapeze and performed at the LA County Fair.
We no longer have a flying trapeze school where I live on Maui so I am now learning the Lyra (or hoop).
Thanks so much to Jennifer for speaking with me and the early copy! Make sure to pick up Love Incorporated on February 14th, 2016.
